With an average of 278 days of sunshine Albuquerque, New Mexico is hard to beat when it comes to placing cities on the “best cities” list for Outside Magazine’s August 2009 issue. If you love the outdoors sunny days are the ones you want. And when you top it off with mild weather, beautiful scenery and an abundance of walking and climbing trails, wonderful rivers and let’s not forget the mountains, what more could you ask for?
Of course it’s no surprise to residents of Albuquerque or those who visit often for vacations and getaways. I’m just surprised that Albuquerque wasn’t higher on there list. Don’t get me wrong number 6 in the entire country is a great spot to be and something to be definitely proud to claim.
This is what Outside Magazine’s Justin Nyberg had to say about Albuquerque’s other fine attributes:
But what sets the Duke City apart these days is stability. Off the speculators’ radar, Albuquerque was relatively unscathed by the circus-tent collapse of the housing market, even as its economy—bolstered by growth in the high-tech, film, and renewable-energy industries—has remained stable. The upshot? It now boasts the fifth-lowest unemployment rate among major U.S. cities. And when all those workers are ready to blow off some steam, the city welcomes them with more green space per capita than any on our list—including easy-access singletrack and the 38,000-acre wilderness just east of the city. Plus three ski areas (including the steeps of Taos), fly-fishing in the Jemez Mountains, and Class IV whitewater are all within day-trip range.
Now how’s that for a good city to live in? He also mentioned the low cost of living and the high average wages. Let’s hope this information doesn’t get spread around too much or we just might have people flocking in droves to take advantage of all this great city has to offer.
