Great Community Theater In Albuquerque!
Albuquerque has great community theater with shows from sophisticated to funky, favorites to cutting edge, And Albuquerqueans can see lots of it. Popejoy Hall at the University of New Mexico gets kudos for sophisticated productions across an incredible range of performances. Here’s a sample of the smaller venues offering a great mix. .
The Albuquerque Little Theatre (ALT) which dates back to 1930, moved into its present building in 1936. The coolness of the building is matched by the quality of the performances. They are currently offering their holiday favorite – Miracle on 34th Street. Get in line to see the True History of Coca Cola in Mexico. Two actors play every part in the play including a conquistador, Poncho Villa, a blonde beach babe, a Mexican housewife, a Coca -Cola executive. Tickets are $22.
The Vortex is a little rough around all the edges (think chairs on bleachers), tackling everything and anything from home-grown playwrights to Antigone by Sophocles. Current showing is Hedwig and the Angry Inch. Tickets are usually $12, but can vary. They invite playwrights to submit scripts of plays of any length for consideration for a production of a staged reading. The public is invited to attend these free public readings.
Tricklock is the Theatre Company in Residence at the University of New Mexico. It’s a professional international theater company “devoted to adventurous performances and to bringing international avant-garde professional theater companies to New Mexico.” They produce the annual Revolutions International Theatre Festival, which will take place January 13th through 31st.
